flashes
« on: July 28, 2006, 11:40:40 AM »
hey guys just wanted to ask a q regarding flashes.  I'm a newbie and i really plan on taking this as a serious hobby.  ;D i currently have a 350d and i was wondering which flash i should be getting.  I don't think i'll be turning pro anytime in the foreseeable future so suggestions on which flash to get that will address  my needs as a hobbyist would be most welcome.

thanks in advance.  ;D

Budget?

A 430EX is around P14.5k
A 580EX is around P22k

There are aftermarket ones as well (like Sigma) but I have no experience with them.

thanks for responding sir dave.  :D

hmm i heard of the 580 but what's the diff between the 580 and the 430?  isn't it a bit too much to get the 580 if i'm just a hobbyist? coz from what i've read (im not sure though) the advantages of the 580 over the 430 are mostly on the added features, features that i might not need as a hobbyist.  is that accurate?

what's the advantage of the 430 over the sigma's?

Not really. I've owned both and the biggest differences are;

1. DIN power. In layman's terms mas malakas bato ng 580EX. The 430EX is perfectly fine unless you want to bounce it off walls and ceilings (or use a Stofen or any clip on diffuser) since you lose a lot of illumination when you start doing that.

2. Faster adjustments. It's like the difference between the 350D (buttons) & the 20/30D (dial). I can adjust the FEC (Flash Exposure Compensation) faster using a dial. The LCD screen of the 580EX also includes a moving bar that instantly tells you how much  illumination is provided so you can quickly adjust the power at a glance.

3. Built-in Bounce Card. I rarely use direct flash so the built-in bounce card really means you can get away with not using a aftermarket diffuser for the 430EX. It's a personal preference, but I never use direct flash anymore (to prevent harsh shadows)

4. Master/Slave. 580EX can control other flash guns, 430EX can't.

So if you plan on a lot of shooting with a flash, go 580EX. If not a 430EX should suffice. The nice thing about flash guns is they also don't depreciate much (like lenses) unless the model is changed (which isn't expected anytime soon).

As to the sigma... I'll let those who have used it chime in na lang.

Good Luck.

The only potential downside I forsee to using a a 580 with the 350d is that your camera becomes top heavy and it inadvertently ruins camera handling.

I once tried using a 350d with a 24-70L and a 550 flash.  I didn't like how the camera handled.  However, I didn't have a vertical grip attached at the time.

Cheers!

im thinking i might just get a 430ex coz from the threads ive been reading parang mejo overkill ata yung 580 especially since i doubt i'll be using multi flash set-ups.

Sir dave, where can i get myself a bounce card and how do i attach it ifever i do get a 430ex?  i read that you can use a white cardboard cut-out, but do they also sell this commercially?

Which would be better for a beginner with a 350D, the 430ex or a Sigma 500 DG Super?

What are the differences between the two?

Kael, whichever you purchase, a flash have a greater effect on your pictures than a new lens. Same as a tripod.

hmm... i came from the same boat... was contemplating what flash to get... but decided to go with the 430EX. haven't tried the sigma but based on the reviews and personal experiences i've read... the 430 is a better choice over the sigma super regardless of what the specs on paper the sigma claims...

just my 2 cents worth! :)

There is already a bounce card included in the 430EX, its like a plastic that you pull dun sa top ng 430EX.

Actually that's not a bounce card, it's a flash diffuser so you can use wideangle lenses with the flash ;) the 580EX has the bounce card.

Yun pala tawag dun, all the while I thought it was a bounce card. Sorry for the confusion. But I saw some using it like a bounce card. I'll try if effective pang bounce, I'll have mine this week. :)

pwede naman talagang gamiting pang bounce yung diffuser.  kung walang diffuser (i.e. 430ex) pwede ring business card o kaya 2X3 index card, resibo, bond paper, etc.  Basta the main idea is you bounce your main light off a ceiling or wall, and throw some light forward to fill in shadows and to create a catchlight in the eyes of your subject.
