Try using extension tubes.
See sample photos (separate topic in this section) when I tried extension tubes on my Sigma 28-70 DC lens.

In reality, true macro lenses are nothing more than extension tubes or fixed stiff belows with some extra glass to correct focus infinity problems and to insure flatness or sharpness across the frame. Ergo, ETs will work better for any other glass you wan to put in . It doesn't mean you can't do macro with other systems, but there are always compromises. Read the past post. Just limit your FL to 35-100mm if you want to use ETs.

But if you are asking for the best, the best is always a true macro lens. If you can't go that route, any other means will do. Just don't expect the "best."
