on a cropped camera
the best lenses are: for inanimate subjects (or insects that dont move much) --- 55mm micro 2.8 with ring light
for flying insects -- butterflies, dragonflies, bees, etc --- 105 -200mm macro / micro lenses ( i like
shooting butterflies with a 300 or 400mm tele
lens from a distance
with a regular flash (bounced or diffused)
aperture settings: try using apertures from f/8 - 22 for the greatest depth of field (with flash). this will certainly
assure you of good focus from eye to tail (including feet), and a nice dark background.
for natural light photography: try using high iso settings, shutter speeds not lower than 1/500/sec. try to shoot them
backlit to emphasize their translucent wings.
photographing butterflies: always try to shoot its profile, and a top shot of its wingspread. its the wing pattern design
that should be captured when photographing them.
