Before you buy a used EOS dSLR...
« on: November 08, 2008, 05:26:54 AM »
I saw this tip from another website.  It's a nifty program that lets you check the actual number of shutter actuations on any EOS digital SLR that features a Digic 3 or Digic 4 processor.  That includes EOS 450D, 1000D, 40D, and 50D.

Would be a good idea to verify the shutter count on a used EOS dSLR before sealing the deal...

How critical is evaluating shutter actuation count when buying used DSLRs? What is an "acceptable" count (in terms of actuations per year of age) for a unit to be considered a good buy? Assuming that the shutter count is nowhere near 50% of the camera's rated shutter life, is this a critical factor or just a nice to have.

What other factors do you need to consider when buying a used DSLR?
The devil is in the details.

as far as I know.....

DSLR camera shutter life around 100-150k actuations

BUT

I saw here in Pipho forum....can't remember which thread......someone's camera shutter died after 7k+ actuations only because he uses continuous burst mode most of the time when he shoots.

consider the condition of the lens for scratches and bumps. if you have good eyesight take a look at the internal side of the lens for specks and fungus.

Sa experience ko mas ok yung ginagamit talaga na camera pero maganda pa rin yung externals. Experience kasi before, nakatambak lang yung slr ng tito ko for over a year. Fresh na fresh used only a few times. Kaso nanigas mga lubricants sa loob kaya di na gumagana yung shutter.

I'd be wary of used units that has not seen the light of day for a long time. Parang tao din yan ang mga camera. Kailangan exercise from time to time. :)
