Uy, nabasa ko sa Pipho to.  :)  For indoor sports, if you have the funds, consider getting a 70-200 2.8.  Kahit walang IS, because you need the 2.8 to freeze the action, and your shutter speed should be high enough to avoid handshake.  If on a budget, then get a 50mm 1.8.

You get unwanted distortion because your focal length is too short.  Going in closer exagerrates perspective.

Typical focal lengths used for portrait photography fall within the 85mm-105mm focal length range - assuming that you are using a 35mm camera.

Cheers!

K

Jo,

It was a discussion on perspective distortion. It had something to do with the patient's nose appearing fine when the photograph was taken, but in the print it looked disproportionately large. A solution was then proposed, "1. Use a longer lens  setting - a 35 efl of at least 80 mm is about right, so that for a  normal-sized print viewed from a normal viewing distance, perspective looks correct. 2. Use the longest end of your zoom lens. For many, this is a 35 efl of 70 mm, which is just about enough."
I couldn't understand any of the above. ???

On film slrs kasi, the focal length of 85 to 105 allows a full-framed portrait taken at a distance that's ideal for conversation to keep the subject comfortable.

At the same time, the focal length is perfect to minimize distortions in full-face portraits common in lenses with focal lengths of 50mm and below (yun parang sabog ung cheeks ng subject...).

Okey-dokey.  Are you familiar with how a person looks as you look through a peephole of a door (the kind you look through in hotel rooms).  That should approximate the distortion that your image will have if you use a focal length that is relatively short if you shoot a close up portrait :D

Cheers!

So, ang ibig sabihin is the closer the focal length to the recording device (film or image sensor), the wider the view and vice versa.. tama po ba?  ???

when you say 50mm are you talking about its slr equivalent or digital? i'm using a 50mm on a d50 for portraits, thats  fine right? coz it becomes around 80mm on a dslr.

A SHORTER focal length will give you a wider field of view.  You tend to go closer to what you are shooting to fill the frame when using short focal length.  This is turn results in greatly exaggerating perspective.

A LONGER focal length gives you a narrower field of view.  Far away subjects therefore will appear closer since they will appear magnified.

Cheers!

The distortion, perspective and DOF that you get with a 50mm lens mounted on a film or full frame digital SLR will be just the same as with a DSLR with a crop factor.

Your D50 only crops the field of view to simulate the narrower angle of view of a longer focal length.  The crop factor does nothing to affect the lens characteristics.

You aren't seeing that much of a distortion when shooting a close up portrait with a 50mm lens because you have to step further away compared to a full frame camera.  The distortion is more apparent the closer you get to the subject.

Cheers!

You can just use the text tool of Photoshop to put copyright info directly on your images.  You might want to adjust the opacity of the text layer to make it still obvious but less obtrusive.

Cheers!

try mo kenrockwell.com...

look for any metering article...dun ang problema mo...

tsaka try shooting in aperture priority or shutter priority muna so that the cam will compensate for the other settings..
