What are you looking for?  In terms of off-cam, I love using my Vivitar 285HV.  Full manual control, good power, pretty cheap too.  Even has a PC connector.

For on-cam/off-cam flexibility, I'm also happy with my Sigma EF500 DG Super.  Again, full manual control, plus it has a built-in optical slave sensor.  I haven't had experience with the ST version, but I've heard that it's lacking in a lot of features, which significantly hampers its flexibility.

I've compared the Canon 580EX and a Metz 58 AF-1. The Canon is really good and the Metz is lacking a bit sometimes here and there. The only problem I have is that the Metz has a tiny flash on its body, so that when you want a bounce flash, you don't get the effect you want coz it still fires a flash directly to the front. Could someone help me how to turn off this tiny flash?

This is what I mean...see the tiny flash below the main flash?

But I think third party flashes are pretty good. They won't be in business if they made products which are superior to other brands won't they. You just have to choose which one you like and suits the bill.

Sunpak works for me. I've tried the 120j barebulb which works really good. But now I'm using the 622 handle mount flash. which is a bit more heavier but is worth the weight for the flash power.

Since you're using a flash wave trigger, that means you're in manual, so the 580ex will only trigger once, hence the sigma will sync.

That's how I do it sometimes with my Vivitar (with Cactus) and my Sigma.
