24-105 vs 18-55 with free 600D -and- Kenko 2x TC vs Canon 2x III

2x extenders:  (i will use this for a moonshot, and then no more)
i think it makes sense to get the III over the II
but does it make sense to get canon at all ... i could just get a Kenko DGX Pro 300 2x

Canon 2x III - 23k
Kenko 2x - 8.8k

next

i need a midzoom lens for the "group pics" on the second body

24-105L <- this would complete my FF lens lineup, better picture quality
vs
18-55 IS + 600D body <- this is actually cheaper and will give me a crop camera to use in tandem with the 2x for that moonshot

it's a happy problem to have.  if money was of no consequence, i of course would buy the best of these (or all of them) e.g. BOTH the canon and kenko 2x (for 4x magnification).  buuuut.  i'm not made of money, so i need help to decide :D

Kenko I hear is good pati since nagtitipid ka rin its a better option para makabili ka pa ng ibang gamit. Just make sure when buying any type of extender na compatible siya sa lens mo. This is important.

Sabi sa info mo camera mo is 300D is this true or not? Kasi kung oo edi me crop body ka na go for the 24-105L lens na lang kung ganun. Eitherway having a good lens is better IMHO. With regards to crop and FF actually kung me FF ka na ok na yan. Here's a good video with good insights on astrophotography and having FF and crop body for taking pictures of heavenly bodies :D:

yes i still have my 300D.  takot ko lang is baka kulang siya ng megapixels.  i mean, panalo na ang FF cam diyan sa 300D even when cropped.

thanks very much for the video!  i learned a lot.  he made a great point on the 40D vs 5D2.  but the newer crop bodies have more megapixels nowadays, so it would really help me in my case :)  on the other hand, with him using just a 200mm + 1.4, i'm now confident enough to get just a single 2x (instead of my dream of getting doubel 2x)

Mike- I would suggest the 24-105mm f4 since it will give you better IQ and constant aperture.

I would choose the Canon 2x III TC over the Kenko.  The reason is that there is a huge degradation in IQ regardless of the MP of the camera whenever you use a 2x TC. If you do not intend to use the TC for birding where minute details mean a lot, or if you just intend to use it for a few times to shoot the moon, then I guess the Kenko will do.  However, should you decide to sell the converter in the future, the value of the Canon lens will be worth more or retains it's value better than the Kenko.

I know the financial side makes you think twice due to the higher price / cost.  If it was me, then I would save up and get the better lenses.

pre, IQ of 55-250 IS is a lot better than 24-105 + 2X combo... so, instead of buying even kenko 2X DGX (which you'll going to use for moon shots only), just buy 55-250 IS. you can use it for other purpose with almost the same price...

i guess in the future (kung nakaipon na ulit) i will buy the 24-XX lens anyway.

sa Canon III naman, if i were to get one for "normal non-moon use" i think ok na ako sa 1.4x, doon na lang siguro ako mag III.  i also learned that the III can't be stacked, will do more research on that.

hindi ko sa moon gagamitin yung 24-105 :)  will attach the 2x to a 200mm lens.  :)

----0----00------

i'm at the moment leaning towards the cheapo options.  600D + kit lens for my group shots and crop camera for the 200mm and kenko 2x TC

+1 to this kasi kung mag 2x ka din liliit din effective aperture mo. At least sa 55-250 mas mura na at sure ka pang walang image degredation at mas malayo pa range mo.
