Warranty --- Do you register?

In the Canon Philippines warranty card for my new EOS dSLR, it says:

"To avail of the Limited Warranty, you must register your product... within 15 days from the date of purchase."

Is this true, that buyers need to turn in their warranty card within 15 days?  Or is this just some kind of scam to get all your personal information on record for their marketing department? (telephone, email, address, cell phone, etc).  I know every single piece of appliance from microwaves to electric fans urge you to register your personal information to their marketing department.

I've always assumed that the warranty applies as long as you have the receipt, the warranty card, and the product.  I'm thinking that I shouldn't register the warranty unless I need to avail of their services.  Just in case I re-sell the camera/lens to someone else, while the warranty is still active.

Any thoughts?

i guess one reason they need your personal information is to verify if you are the actual owner of the product. it's not a 'kind of scam', it's a way for companies to know who buys their products so they'll have an idea on how to improve the product itself, their customer service and what other products you might be interested in.

personally i keep all the warranty cards with the attached receipts. i have also taken advantage of canon's e-warranty service at canon.com.ph. just create a profile a www.canon.com.ph/portal/ and you can have your product warranty registered.

my two cents.  ;)
