Fungus is fungus rico, regardless of where or what it attacks.  We're sort of in the same boat when it comes to humidity.  Not unless you have A/C and want to leave it on 24/7, I suggest you fill your area from corner to corner with those silica dehumidifiers (those P88.00 types that can be bought at Japan home will do) and get yourself dry boxes/ cabs for your gear.

may drybox naman ako. pero we all know that this is not enough. i knew some people na tinamaan pa din kahit well taken cared of ang kanilang gamit. i have an old sigma 24mm na tinamaan din while i was in SG on assignment. despite the fact that i always put my gears sa drybox when i dont use it.

sa susunod, pag lalabas ako, ilalagay ko sa ziplock bag na may silica gel  :o :o :o

Ok lang kaya na ilagay ang dry cabinet sa loob ng cabinet?  Bought a wonderful dry cab and I put it inside my closet may outlet dun where I plugged it, ok lang kaya yun?

I have exactly the same set-up - and it's been plugged for about 4 years now.  Awa ng Diyos, wala naman issues. I heard na maliit lang naman current draw ng dehumidifier, so it really shouldn't be a problem.

I am having an issue with my dry cabinet and try as I might I dont have a solution. I bought a new one as a backup and it works fine so my gear is safe while i work on the problematical one.

Mine is a "wonderful" brand dry cabinet with digital hygrometer that I bought in the Nikon shop Ghills in Dec 2010 for 6.5k. It was the 2 shelf unit and one of the smaller ones.

I have had it set to around 40-45% RH for 10 months then the last few weeks it shot up to 55% RH and the SOB wont drop to 45% since. It goes up and down like a yo-yo between 48% and 55% even with the lowest setting.

Things I have tried include:

1. Turning it off and on
2. Emptied the contents into another dry box which is consistent at 45% and tried it for days unopened to lower it without any luck
3. Changed the battery in the hygrometer with some slight success but then still it slipped back to 55%

It is really weird - during the day it always drops to around 48-49% and then slips back to 53-54% like its loosing its ability to hold the RH consistent to sub 45%.

I now have it on its lowest setting and will leave it for another few days but I am unsure how to fix it.

To make matters worse I went to the Nikon shop and ask for the place where they sent them to get fixed as they said the warranty was 6 months (cant find the OR sadly) and Digital Walker said 12 months..    Yet none of them knew where to get it fixed or how one fixes it outside of warranty.

Anyway guys any thoughts on this RH% issue?  Can I get it repaired somewhere if it needs to be fixed?

How do i check this? i bought a second hygrometer out of Infomaxx today and stuck it in about an hour ago.

Naturally the % shot up with it opened but here it an hour after it is closed.

The old one that is screwed into the cabinet window on the door is showing: 59%

The mobile one in the middle of the shelf is showing: 46%

Could the position indicate a leak in the door or is the old one busted?

either your dehumidifier is defective or there is a leak in your cabinet.  if you're a diy you can tinker with it.  check the motor of the dehumidifier, hth.

then it's your hygrometer which is in error ;D.  see if you can adjust it.

the only safe way to adjust it is to throw it out and keep the mobile one lol...

seriously though i am not sure how to adjust it, it is positioned right at the top of the door so could the fact it is so close to the seal be whats causing the malfunction? I wonder why it was fine for 10 months beforehand? I even changed the battery. I dont see a way of calibrating it either.
