I got my tamron 17-50 shipped from Tony Leung of new sankyo camera hk. It was about 3k cheaper including shipping.
So far I'm extremely happy with it. I will agree that the af is kinda slow.

Sent from my Legend
[I used to have this tammy.  i found out that the AF kinda haunts & is a little bit noisy]

tamron 17-50 has a lot of issue.. mine got stuck at 17mm.. and needs to be repaired soon.. it also has a back focus issue and the materials used with this lens are plastic. even the gears inside used for af and zooming are plastic... not for long term investment..

I'm planning to replace my 18-55mm kit lens and I'm torn between Canon 17-55mm 2.8 and Canon 50mm 1.4. What you guys think should I buy first? I like taking portraits and landscapes. any comments/suggestion will be appreciated. :)

Definitely the 2.8 bro. You don't need a 1.4 for landscapes.

I've got the same basic stock kit, but I'm more leaning towards portraiture.
Which lens do i pick between the 1.4 and the 2.8?  :-\

I don't mean to offend anybody ..but with my experience with lenses (frustrating experiences) sold off all third party and non L lenses that I have; to have the "trinity of lenses"

Try to have:

landscape - 16-35 mm 2.8 (canon) or 14-24 mm 2.8 (nikon)
walk around / portrait - 27-70 mm 2.8 (canon) or same focal length for nikon
sport / portrait - 70-200 mm 2.8 for canon and nikon

with all of these and still bad photos.....try skydiving
If at first you don't succeed; skydiving is not for you.

Question on the Canon 2.8L Version II: is it worth the additional bucks or not?

Should I go for the version 1 or the version 2?

Thanks!

that's a lot of money for a small / not groundbreaking changes from 60k to 90k if I'm not mistaken...your choice, your money ...if you can find a year or 2 year old ver.1 that would be great 40k to 45k

Oo nga, pero there lies the issue... hardly anyone sells the version 1, and a good one at that because it is a workhorse...

oh well... hanap hanap.... :-)

I have the Canon 17-55mm 2.8. It has a fast focus and and the pictures are sharp. Plus with the 17mm you can also use it for landscapes. Make sure you get a 77mm CPL as well
