the cropped sensor is forced to take only the images that passes through the center part of the lens, thus you dont have to stop it down

Yes. As of today, it is one of the limitations of lens production. Sharpness degrades towards the edges especially at widest aperture setting. On www.photozone.de lens reviews, they specify different lens sharpness figures for both center and border (edge).

A better lens is said to be one that pushes sharpness towards the edges. So far, the L lenses (and Nikon equivalent) have the best center to edge performance (Canon 18-55 IS kitlens and Tamron 17-50 non-VC are good too). But still their edge sharpness is not at par with center. This is not noticeable unless the image is viewed 100% (pixel peeping).

Some lenses that suffer worse edge sharpness are: olympus 17mm f2.8 pancake lens, E-mount 16mm f2.8 pancake lens and Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC. This means that a smaller area at the center is excellently sharp and softness gets worse and worse toward the edges. But if these lenses are used for shallow DOF, then border softness is not an issue.

DOF refers to the range of focus plains where objects appear sharp (or relatively sharp). It doesn't refer to the out-of-focus plains. Just say "nice blur" (or bokeh) instead of "nice DOF".

very informative... thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge about the sweet spot...

personally though, it's very seldom that i use my sweet spot, usually when taking pictures of group of people only. i love the bokeh produced at f1.4 ~ f2.8 for potraiture. macro shots, landscape at f11 and above for DOF.. indoor shots at f1.8 ~f2.8 for faster shutter speed because i don't have a flashgun..

i'm still a newbie, but when i understood the relations of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, DOF etc, that's when i started to care less about the sweet spot and focus on the settings that i need in the current situation where i will take the shot to achieve my desired effect. just my 2cents...:)
