Are you a 16:9 or 3:4 shooter?
« on: September 24, 2007, 08:24:29 AM »
i would just like to ask fellow pipho members kung ano po ang preferred aspect ratios nila when taking photographs?

i'm kinda leaning towards the 16:9 ratio kasi, parang mas type ko yung composition when using that kind of ratio.

however, i noticed especially sa mga competitions that i've seen na di naman usually ginagamit yung 16:9 ratio, usually 3:4.

any thoughts po? would love to hear from you guys! :P

My DSLR has a 2:3 ratio. I usually compose and frame to fit the 2:3, as well as  8R - which is 4:5, and 5R which 5:7.

This means multiple shots if I dont want any more cropping in PP.

There are few solid "rules" on the aspect ratio to be used.  Some people maximize whatever ratio their camera provides ("You didn't frame it right in the first place"), others compose their pictures based on the size that they're going to print (4R, 5R, 6R, 8R, A4, etc.).

However, I say that you should use whatever ratio works for you, your subject, and your photographic style, kahit ba 1:1 or even 41:5 as in this photo: http://www.photo.net.ph/displayimage-2011-15.html .  And it doesn't even have to be the same every time either.

BTW, 16:9 is not a very common photographic aspect ratio, but it is a common video ratio.  Are you using an HD camera?

using a Canon S3 is po and i really love shooting using the widescreen mode. i find it more pleasing than the usual 3:4 ratio (for me).

i can't seem to find the other ratios mentioned in the previous posts on my camera. sa SLR's lang po ba meron nun?

thanks po!  :D

Actually, most cameras (like my 350D) only have one aspect ratio.  Most of the others are done in post-processing (though it's good to consider it it mentally before you take the picture).

Hope this helps...

you're a potential "panoramic camera" shooter.  check them out.  i think its what you've been looking for.  im not sure if they are 16:9 though but you will definitely enjoy using them.  :)

i think lomo has some.  Its called Kompakt .  There are other brands as well but kinda expensive na.  Try the lomo first.  It can produce nice images.  Film camera ito ah.   :)

mcCoy,
the aspect ratios you talk about about are normally used for filming- as in movies and tv. 16:9 is a film camera aspect ratio that is not used on still cameras. this is the aspect ratio that you see when you watch a movie in a standard theatre with a 35mm projector this is also the same size you see when you watch a dvd on a non-HD or wide TV set where you see black cropping marks on the top and bottom of your screen. the 3:4 ratio naman is standard TV ratio when you watch a local or even cable tv where there is no cropping on the screen. Confusion sometimes arise when certain prosumer or point n shoot digital cameras have a "16:9" mode wherein it shows a slightly "wide" angle of coverage. i think it's just a marketing term for lack of anything better to call it but true 16:9 its not as it only crops the bottom and top of the shot, rather than 16:9 i think the better term to use is a panoramic ratio. hope this helps  :)

yup onga po napansin ko nga na na-crop lang yung bottom and upper parts nung pictures pag nasa wide mode yung camera ko.. i however checked the ratios on the accompanying manual of my camera and the two i most often used are:

Large:  2816 x 2112 pixels
Wide:   2816 x 1584 pixels

i made the computation po, the Large is 4:3 and the Wide is 16:9.

there are three more image data sizes on my S3is but i rarely use them kasi maliit (medium1, medium2, and small).

I never really checked, but the full resolution is 3456x2304, or 3:2.  Tamang tama sa 4R (4x6)

My Sony A700 DSLR lets me choose between the normal 3:2 aspect ratio and a 16:9 aspect ratio.  I know a few Panasonic P&S cameras also let you do the same thing.  Right now I only shoot in 3:2 mainly because I am not too sure on how to print a 16:9 photograph.  This will be something to explore the next time I am on vacation...or when I have some time off.  ;)
