This has been a common problem with the D700 that requires you as the owner to pay for the replacement of the hotshoe assembly. I spent around $285 USD to get mine replaced before via Nikon USA in California. It happened after 3 years of use.

Yes, this is a common problem. Probably due to 3 factors
1. hot shoe construction of the D700 is different from the older DSLR and film cameras.
The hot-shoe ground for older Nikon cameras are fastened by screw to a metal, then the metal is soldered to the flexible cable. Very good electrical contact. The hot-shoe ground for D700 is connected to the flexible cable by screw. They have improved the D200 condition by using 3 screws connected to the flex instead of one but if there's oxidation on the exposed copper of the flexible cable, this will cause poor electrical contact.
2. The hot-shoe metal looks different from the older Nikon cameras. They could have changed supplier or plating process. We all know the reason why.
3. New flashes are quite heavy, causing the hot shoe to "rock" a bit

How I fix this problem.
1. I salvaged old hot shoe for older camera. Fitting is exactly the same
2. Add solder in the flexible cable for better electrical contact

I also have a problem with my d700's hotshoe. What happens is when I put a flash (sb900) on top of my hotshoe, it sometimes keeps on firing even though i didnt trigger it.... putok ng putok yung flash...parang na shoshort ang nangyari.... so replacement of hotshoe assembly ba ang solution?  the d700 is with me na for more than 2 years, i used it heavily sa weddings.

Not really necessary to replace the hotshoe.

You'll get a higher success rate with Columbia Cubao.  One of my friend had his hot shoe replaced which had a similar symptom with your D700.

(yes, I know it's a case-to-case basis, but I think a few of us have the same type of problem, so it should be more or less in the same price vicinity).

Thanks!

P7,900 with cleaning.
They diagnosed it first. Nakitang problem hindi hot shoe. Flash sync problem daw tapos battery drain problem nakita din. Parang bago na ulit sensor sa sobrang linus. Nice job. Mas maganda service sa columbia cubao compared sa cdsc megamall.

Just had my D700 hotshoe problem (pumipitik-pitik kahit walang shutter release, and happens at inopportune times). Apparently, this has been a common problem for the D700 (and the D200 which I still own -- and which also has a hotshoe problem).

Anyway, Columbia Cubao (take note: they have moved to a new place; walking distance from their old place, right beside PureGold). Hotshoe problem was P5,000+, and then sensor cleaning was P1,250 yata. Sensor cleaning is normally more, but since I had something done, parang package price na.

This post is just an FYI. And, again, kudos to Jesse for doing a good job with my camera.

Sir,

Tanong lang, ganoong katagal nila ginawa yung hotshoe? I have exactly the same problem - pero iisa lang body ko, so di ko makuhang iwan ng more than a week.  Nakaka panic pag nag stobe siya. Was in the middle of a wedding shoot when it happened again last week. Had to get it off cam, and trigger the SB 800 with built-in via CLS.  Ok sana, but di ka maka pitik ng 'double tap' so kelangan sigurado.

Thanks in advance!
