Nikon D700 FX + 35mm 1.8g DX
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:22:30 PM »
Good day,

Its hard to carry big long zoom lenses (16-35 / 24-70 / 70-200) everyday. And i like a small prime that i can replace my lineup as everyday lens.i really like the FL of the 35mm lens on FX and ive been reading about this combo D700 (on fx mode) + 35 1.8g DX on other forums. And i was wondering, has anyone tried this already? I know there will be a slight vignetting but its bearable. Would like to know your comments about this.

Thanks.

That was my dilema before but the Nikon 28mm f1.8G is the better solution IMO. Slightly larger and wider but a little step forward will get you the framing that you are looking for.

Thanks for the inputs guys. Naka pag try na kasi ako ng 35 f2. And its kinda soft wide open. Maybe its just the lens na try ko ay bad copy.

The 28mm is a very good lens. Hands down. But its a little bit pricey for my everyday lens. 37-40k here in manila. Im looking for a cheaper alternative. Im still saving up for a body upgrade or wider aperture lens at the end of the year. So i have to set my priorities straight. I can justify a sub $200 lens to be my everyday carry.

Seriously Myk, if you don't mind MF, a 28mm 2.8 series E is very cheap or a little more the 28 AI/AIS 2.8 is a bang for the back.

Just use your 16-35mm f4 VRII since it is very good at 35mm. The lens is long but is much lighter than the 24-70mm f2.8.

Myk, I used a 40mm Macro DX lens on a D3s and it's pretty wonderful. Very very slight vignette.

The above was shot using that setup. No PP except watermark.

The 40mm DX is quite a cool lens. :)

I had a 35mm 1.8G dati. It works with the D700 at f/1.8 naman with really minor vignetting but stopped down below that, nagiging heavy na ang vignette. It's sharp on the center and not so sharp on the corners/edges but still works naman. But I still sold it with my D90. The 28mm 1.8G is a really nice one.

hi again, just want to update my final decision about D700 + 35mm lens. I'd tried the 35mm 1.8G DX lens, its ok when shooting people subjects in close range but other than that, may vignetting talaga.

I saw a 2nd hand 35mm f2D around here and give it a try. its wonderful. I finally found a decent and sharp copy of the lens that can shoot wide open at f2. i love the colors and how a prime works all the time.

thanks for your inputs and suggestions guys. good day.

Here's a sample of the 35mm f2D works well with FX :)

I'd personally skip the 35mm DX on an FX body since I shoot landscapes at that focal length where the light fall off on the corners would be bothersome.

I just returned from a 2 week holiday in Portugal.  Most of the time, all I had on me was my D700, 20 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4D (not G), and an 85 f/1.8.  It is quite liberating to know that I can live with this set-up.  On my next trip though, I'd bring my 24-70.

The N really does make a big difference especially since I don't always go to places at the photography witching hour.  I lost many shots due to glare on the 20mm.  This said, I also gained many shots due to the wide angle of view of the 20 vs. the 24-70 and the faster aperture on both the 50 and the 85.

I've not been interested in the new G lenses as they are big and heavy--thus negating what to me is one of the big gains of using primes vs. zooms.
