TIMELAPSE: Chase the Clouds | Mt. Pulag
« on: July 04, 2012, 02:04:28 PM »

Hello pipho. Please check out my latest adventure.

Have you been to Mt. Pulag? Let me take you there right now! Watch in HD and with speakers turned ON.

https://vimeo.com/45174541

Thanks to those who shared beautiful photos of Mt. Pulag here in Pipho. You inspired me to work on this project. The timelapse turned out the way I imagined it to be. But it was an adventure I might only do once. This is probably my most challenging timelapse project.
2922 meters above sea level
20,000 images
100 GB worth of files
40 kg of baggage
1 brave spirit

Thanks also to CMPI for the opportunity to test Canon 5DM3's timelapse capabilities. I must say, it's ability to shoot 7 or 5 AEB's (bracketed shots) kicks *toink* in shooting HDR timelapse. It covers wider dynamic range as compared with 5DM2. Just perfect for shooting sunrise and sunset scenes.

For timelapse enthusiasts, take notice of the rapid changes in light and color. I was fortunate to capture the phenomena in a place with microclimate condition.

Also available in youtube. [size=78%]

Fantastic work, Photobong! Very inspiring too and your work makes me want to try my hand at time-lapse photography.

20,000 photos (you are one determined man!!!) spread over 2 minutes and 50 seconds. May I know how many shots per minute you took for this? My son and I were computing and at 1 shot per 10 seconds, it would have taken you 2.3148 days of continuous shooting.

Bravo!

Bravo!

Thanks for appreciating my work sir. Please try timelapse photography as well. It's fun!

After I transferred all my photos to my hard drive, I looked at properties to show me the number of files. It said more than 20k. Most of the shots were taken at an interval of 6 seconds. Interval in timelapse means time between click of the shutter. So every 6 seconds, a shot is made. Shot count ballooned to this much because some footage were taken in 5 AEB, a mighty power of Canon 5DM3 (5DM2 can only take 3 AEB). Meaning, 5 bracketed shots were taken every 6 seconds. This is a special area already called HDR timelapse.

In every scene, I tried to make 10 seconds worth of footage. I only used 3-5 seconds in final edit. The rest were allowance for errors and video transitions, much is usually thrown away.

I brought with me a Canon 5DM3 (courtesy of CMPI), and my 2 5DM2's. So, 3 cameras in all. In some instances, all those 3 were shooting simultaneously. It's not a problem since I also brought 3 tripods, 1 table top tripod, 4 heads, and a 6-foot long dolly. That explains the 40kg that I had to bring up the summit. Of course, I couldn't have done it without a guide and the porters (hehe). I stayed at Mt. Pulag for 3 days and 2 nights. Unfortunately, too much fog did not permit me to shoot startrails. Sayang!

As for the video, I run it in 30fps. So the 2mins 50sec video used up only over 5k shots.

I hope that clears up everything. Thanks for asking. :)

Cheers!

Canon Philippines would do well to keep you in their stable as your work is doing a lot in convincing people to get the 5DM3.

I have some follow-up questions on your Pulag time-lapse video.

1.  When you take AEB (5 in the case of the 5DM3) does the camera possess the capability to process the 5 pictures into one or do you process the auto bracketed pictures in an HDR program like Photomatix?  Btw, it's surprising to learn that the 5DM2 could only do 3 AEB shots because even my old D300 can do up to 7.

2. Did you get to stay at the peak the whole time or did you have to do the 3am climb every morning? Did you stay from sunrise to sunset or did you do separate climbs? What hours did you get to shoot?

Thanks in advance!

Those are nice words to say. Thank you sir.

1. Canon 5DM3 has an HDR capability. It can take 3, 5 or 7 AEB's and process them in-cam into a single HDR file. I do not use this function in shooting HDR Timelapse because it takes the camera quite a bit of time to process. ie. ~30 seconds for one HDR photo. It's better, IMHO to grab all those bracketed shots (raw and unprocessed) and merge/process them later using HDR softwares plus lightroom/photoshop. That would provide better control of the processing. I use gingerHDR and photomatix.

2. We settled at camp 3. We hiked up to summit at 4am every morning. It's a relatively easy climb for just about 20-30mins. Our guide told us that camping at the summit was not anymore allowed. They would leave me at the summit after sunrise and fetch me at lunch. We stayed at camp 3 in the afternoon because of the rain and thick fog. I got a bit of sunset at camp 3. Just a little window, say 30mins, to shoot. No chance to hike up the summit for a sunset shoot.

HTH. Thanks again.
