Whats the advantage/disadvantage of the two? Whats the difference if I use the 50mm for portrait instead of the 85mm? thanks

parehas lang yan, magkaiba lang ng focal length at ang size/weight.

Given that the distance between the camera (w/ 50mm and 85mm) and the subject is the same @ f1.4, more bokeh on the 85mm...@ same aperture, increasing the focal length means decreasing the depth of field...more bokeh...

Pero take note na ginawa nila yung samples using full frame sensors..

With DX dslr multiply by 1.5 for nikon..1.6 for canon..

85mm 1.4, better in terms of portraiture. distortion is almost negligible and lens compression makes a lot of difference. Your background seems closer due to the compression. More blurred at f/1.4 but not as flexible as the 50mm due to its longer focal length.

50mm 1.4 much has been said on the BI thread of the sigma 50mm 1.4. Hehe wala na ako macomment.

Bottomline, wala dyan sa dalawa ang hinahanap mo.. meron ka na 30mm 1.4 tsaka 70-200. hehe..
Pero kung bibili ka pa din between the two, i suggest 50mm 1.4.

great article @Cito TFS :D

just want to re iterate this:
200mm for face only, 135mm for entire head, 85mm for head and shoulders, 50mm for upper body, and 35mm for full length

BTW for DX / crop bodies is there a distortion with the 50? i heard that for the 35mm vs 50mm the 35 has more distortion and i thought 50 has non bec it is the standard "view" when you try to look through the viewfinder then close your eye (that is in the viewfinder) and open the other eye.

A 50mm lens is still a 50mm lens whether you use a full frame camera or a APS camera.

Generally, you can use any focal length to capture the whole body given the space for the photographer.. :) I liked shooting with the 70-200 at 70 or at 200 shooting whole body shots..

Sounds right.. you just get the crop effect just like you zoomed on to something..

Take note na yung "focal length = framing" na binanggit sa article ay sariling preference nung photographer. The proper choice of focal length depends on a lot of things, is your subject fat or thin, do you have enough space if you use a long FL lens, and of course do you have all the moolah to buy all those focal lengths? ;D

For me the "safest" FL to use for portraiture is 85mm be it on FF or cropped sensor.

Yup. Agreed. Depende rin sa style ng photographer. Considering the author was using a FF cam, these shots mean the model was pretty close to the camera so distortion lalabas talaga... Imagine if he used a shorter FL like 24, 28, 35 and go up close. Makita palang ng model mo yung ilong nya tawa nalang kayo :D  I'd have to agree din 85 will be the safest for ff. I'd prefer the 135 over these two though. :D Personally I use the sigma 50 as well whenever I shoot portraits. Nakasanayan lang siguro pero I work around the pros and cons.

Posted the link just to show there is a difference between the two. Hindi lang FL/size/weight. :D
