Sony RX100 20mp hi-end compact camera
« on: June 06, 2012, 09:43:07 PM »
New high-end PnS from Sony: RX100 20MP 1" sensor camera. Size is slightly bigger to Canon S95

Lens specs: f/1.8-4.9 28-100mm 135 eq.

Price: $650

Print quality results from imaging-resource

Quote
Though its official base ISO starts at 125, the Sony RX100's ISO 80 images looked good printed at 24 x 36 inches. Color was muted, particularly yellows and greens, as we also found in our MacBeth test target.

ISO 125 shots also looked quite good at 24 x 36, with excellent detail, but the muted color persisted.

ISO 200 images also looked very good at 24 x 36, if a little softer than ISO 125. Not enough to require a smaller print size.

ISO 400 images printed very nicely at 20 x 30 inches, with sharp detail.

ISO 800 shots were soft enough at 20 x 30 that we preferred the 16 x 20-inch prints, though we'd still call the 20 x 30-inch prints usable for most subjects. By ISO 800, the red leaf swatch appeared soft.

ISO 1,600 shots are usable at 16 x 20 inches, but look better at a still impressively large 13 x 19-inch size. The red leaf swatch was very soft at this point.

ISO 3,200 images look good at 13 x 19 inches, with the exception of the difficult red leaf swatch.

ISO 6,400 images are a bit soft for 11 x 14-inch prints, but look pretty good at 8 x 10.

Overall, the Sony RX100 stands out as a pocket camera that can produce good quality 24x36-inch prints from ISO 80 to 200, and even its highest ISO of 6,400 outputs a good quality 8x10. Impressive!

The only feature that I like most is being pocketable and the one I hate is its price.I wish the Nikon 1 is this small.

Im also waiting for this camera. Sensor is a lot bigger than fuji x10, panasonic lumix lx5, olympus xz-1, canon g12 but the size of the camera is just a tad larger than the canon s100. Plus a F1.8 lens. Looks very good on paper. Too bad the srp is quite high at $650 usd

The Panasonic Lumix Lx5 and Olympus xz-1 are over a year old so an update would be coming in the near future. Hopefully their replacements would also follow sony's rx100 trend with a bigger sensor on a pocket size body (or they make a new model directly competing with the rx100) Although the lx5 and xz-1 are quite small, it wont fit your jeans or shirt pocket. If its not pocketable, a m43 camera would make more sense. Just my thoughts

OK. I just wanted to show that there is another alternative to the RX100 in addition to the S100, X10, LX5 and XZ-1.

Panasonic LX7 has a disappointingly small 1/1.7" sensor http://www.dpreview.com/previews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx7 so the Sony RX1000 still has no direct competition for its sensor size to portability ratio. You get a ultra compact camera with a 1inch sensor. Only drawback is it's $650 srp price tag which is expensive, even costing way more than some interchangeable lens cameras. If the actual street price can go down to the $500 range in the near future, than this would be a good buy =)

Looks really quick, has a big 1" sensor, an even brighter 1.8 lens with good video capabilities and small enough to fit in your front pocket.  Qualities for you to go out and buy one!
But hold on... all these fine features will make you use the camera more often.  Unless the internal battery holds up to lots of use then this will be one heck of a camera!
