It depends on your lens preference AND budget. G lenses are usually insanely expensive. D lenses are used in film days and still excellent in digital.

For me, I maximize the focus motor of your D90. To answer your question, buy D prime lenses. 85mm f1.8D for me.

it really depends on your pocket since your body is d90.  Im also temted to buy G lenses, but when I measure everything including cost I ended up with D lenses. if cost doesn't matter, go for the G.

One big advantage on some Gs now is that they are sharper at the widest aperture..
Like the 50G and 85G 1.8s..

Mas sharp sila @1.8 compared sa D versions..

Isa sa main reason why we buy large aperture lens is to be able to use it at the widest when we need to..

I don't want to use my 50 1.8D at 1.8 kasi soft yung image..laging nasa 2.8..

Pero sa 50 1.8G you will have sharp images at 1.8..same story with 85 1.8G..

I will  consider the 28G N 1.8, 50G 1.8 and the 85G 1.8 over the D versions...not so expensive not cheap either but great IQ compared to the D's. As trainer lenses I opted to buy the cheap MF lenses like the 28AIS, 50AIs, 105ais. If I can find an 85ais 1.4 I will choose this over the G's or the D's.Sorry for inserting the MFs, I just can't help it. The MF lenses are great lenses and Nikon's recent releases of G primes are almost as good as the old Nikkors plus an AF....However, that is a very personal opinion so take it as a grain of salt.

Since your D90 has a built in motor, it would be unwise to buy a G lens. You just have to maximize the full feature of your cam and appreciate how freakin' awesome the D90 is.   ;D

for me it depends on what lens you are planning to buy. if 50mm. i would suggest na D na lang. though G is sharper pero hindi masyado for me lang ha. pero kung 85mm i would suggest na get the G version. super sharp at wide open tapos ang ganda pa ng kulay. it's just me...

I tried most of the 50mm variants, 1.8, 1.8D, 1.4D, and now using a 1.8G version.  I say it's sharper and contrasty.  Such a joy to use.  :)

go for G! sharp even in the widest aperture

in the case of the D, what's the use of having an F/1.8 if you're limited in its usage and stopping it down most of the time since the widest aperture is not that sharp. not exactly bang for buck huh?

I'd go for the G lenses; newer technology, newer coatings....weather sealed and you can use them wide open.

If you have the money, then by all means get the G for the reasons stated above. However, D's are not bad at all,  in fact, I'm using a 50mm f1.8D on my D90 and im pretty much satisfied with it...  ;D

In my opinion:

1.4G > 1.8G > 1.4D > 1.8D.

This will be my preference order and budget will dictate which one.
