yes, i tried using kit lens with IR filter, it gives hotspot.

here's a photo i took using kit lens:
http://caleb.photonski.com/med/fray/100639-med-IMG_4079.jpg

Base on the link given by dave, the kit lens of canon 18-55mm gives hotspots. can anybody atest to this?

have you done the custom white balance part where you use the sky or geen leaves as reference? -if you skipped that part kasi reddish talaga yung lalabas.

hi!

is RM-72 just the same as R-72? thanks

medyo magkaiba daw sir according to this site:
http://www.hoyaoptics.com/color_filter/ir_transmitting.htm

Infrared Transmitting Filters
"Infrared-transmitting filters absorb most of the visible region and transmit the infrared region. They include the R and IR series, which sharply cut off part of the infrared, the RM series, which smoothly and gradually cut them off, and the RT series which band-pass the infrared region."

so i guess the RM might let a little bit more "red" like the cokin p007

thanks pre!  :) buti nalang tinanong ko muna.. hehe

if you prefer the Hoya R-72 i saw a 58mm at Infomaxx Megamall, mas mahal nga lang ng konti at 2,800 pesos.

ah... so puwede rin pala yun slides... :D
paano ba yun custom white balance?
thanks for the reply pubert... ;D

i'm not sure if slides would work... pero if i take a shot with the ir filter on without using custom white balance, reddish yung lumalabas so since similar yung result maybe you're on the right track...  ;D

about setting the white balance... nikon user pala kayo sir so hindi ko alam, magkaiba kasi yung procedure sa nikon and canon eh. try nyo po tanong si sir dni or sir edwink

guys help naman. recently bought a Hoya IR filter after being inspired by your breathtaking IR photos. I had the chance to try IR photography for the first time awhile ago. Took a few shots and i'm not satisfied with the results. I shot about 5 IR photos and all of them produced a vignet like effect that's evident sa sky (hot spot ba yun?)  :) Ito na yung best photo ko from awhile ago. Please advise on how to improve this photo and what i've done wrong. thanks. I really hope to learn doing IR Photos.

Camera: 350D
Lens Used: 24-70 2.8L (kasama naman siya sa list of preferred lenses for IR)
Filter : Hoya R72
ISO: 100
Exposure: Manual
Aperture: f5
Shutterspeed: 10 secs.
Focal length" 30mm

Hula lang sa settings.
Custom white balance used: image of a sun lit green grass

thanks in advance.  :)

- Richard

No cloud formation rin kanina. The sky was pale blue. Is that a factor?  ??? Thanks for your patience  ;D

has anybody tried using the IR filter from Cookin? Nung last Photoworld kasi they were selling IR filters both A and P-series filter holders and sabi sa akin nagkaubusan ng IR filters. Their IR slide filters cost around P800+ lang kasi, way cheaper than the Hoya R72. Can anyone post sample pics taken using those filters. Thanks in advance for the feedback. ;D

Hi Richard,

Yes, that is a hotspot.  :-\

I recommend you change your aperture to f/2.8. Depending on the heat of the sun, shutter speed varies from 4-10 seconds. May I ask what time of the day was your shot taken?

Best conditions for IR:
Scorching heat from sun
Clouds (for more dramatic effect)
Green green grass
always shoot at subjects na naaarawan, for the white foliage effect..

Hope this helps :)

Thanks you very much, Ann.  :)
I'll try to use larger aperture next time. Wasn't able to experiments on different aperture settings on that day since i was very excited to shoot. hehe  ;D

I think i was shooting between 12:30 to 1:30. The sun was up but there were really no clouds.
Oh well, i'll try to go to UP later to practice on IR once again.

Really thank you, Ann for sharing your knowledge on IR. Hope to take beautiful IR photos like those you posted. Thanks again.  :)
