Evil genuises! hehehe! Have anyone tried fixing an IR filter sa 30D? What's the take? Gaganda kasi ng mga IR shots nyo kaya gusto ko rin mag try. Thanks!

Since PiPho was down all day, I actually found the time to do some tests with a Nikon D40 I recently acquired.

Just click on the images to view them large...

Looks like a typical IR right?

The biggest difference is these images were shot HANDHELD with NO need for a tripod, no custom white balance, and I even left AF ON and shot it as if I was shooting a normal image without a R72 filter.

This confirms the suspicion I had that the D40 does not have the same aggressive low pass filters on all Canon DSLRs as well as the Nikon D200 and D80.

The only caveat is I had to set the camera to shoot B&W using the optimize image menu.

What a relief as I can probably add a whole new element to shooting IR from the CAR without a tripod or all sorts of preparations normally required for a IR shot.

I am gonna enjoy this setup.

Thats really nice to hear Dave your frustrations on the low pass filter has been partly solved... Anyway it seems that new baby of yours will stay longer than you expected ;)

Thanks!

Yes... this cam is stayin' here.

I still have some problems setting a custom white balance shot with the D40. Nawalan lang ako ng araw :(

Wow a non-aggressive low pass filter. Did you really get a D40 to try this or you had some other purpose? So, do you still have plans on getting this cam modified for IR?  ;D

I got this for the upcoming Op to Batanes since I wanted a 2nd body.

I was thinking of modifying it but for now that plan is shelved while I investigate the D40 further.

Ha ha ha...

That's because I just poked the lens out of the side window and blazed away :)

At ISO1600.. I was able to get some blown highlights na so I guess this setup will work barely without having to modify the camera ;)

very nice sir! a cam with a "not-so-agressive IR blocking filter". Pero sir, tanong ko lang ano po yung problem sa CWB? saka why do you have to shoot in B&W? ano po itsura nung colored image? reddish din po ba? thanks sir! kakainggit tuloy yung D40! hehe!  ;D

For some weird reason that still escapes me... I CAN'T get a CWB shot to be accepted sa D40 whether I do it on the spot, or use an existing shot to base the white balance on.

I CAN shoot it in RAW (sa Nikon it's NEF) and still get the false color IR I love to do, PERO it will require more expensive software like Capture NX which I really don't want to do kasi extra gastos na naman sa mga PiPhols who wish to follow my footsteps :)
