Mahusay talaga yang 18-55..

Mas nagustuhan ko pa nga output niyan kesa sa 18-200 VR2..and ibinenta ko agad si VR2 at si 18-55 ang nag-stay sa akin..

Pero yan yung unang pinapalitan agad ng karamihan na bago pa lang..not really knowing how good it performs..

add ko na lang rin.
it just shows what the 18-55mm kit lens are capable of :D

Naiisip agad palitan yung kit lens eh hindi pa nila nagagamit to its full potential.

One of the things na adjustment na kailangan gawin sa entry level Nikons with the kit lens eh yung Exposure Compensation. Once you nail the the adjustment na kailangan gawin sa scene, the kit lens performs well.

Heto, from Nikon France, images from 18-55 VR mounted on a D3200, note the Exp Compensation settings:

@ 26mm f/8 iso 100 -2/3 exp comp AutoWB

@ 45mm f/5.6 iso 1600 -2/3 exp comp Manual WB

@ 22 mm f/3.8 iso 100 -2 exp comp AutoWB

please do not get me wrong, coming from a nikon D90 with a system consisting of a 50mm 1.4d, 16-85mm afs, 70-300mm af, sb400, sb700, i decided to switch to micro 4/3; oly omd of course, because of size and weight consideration plus a pretty excellent IQ even in high iso shots that my d90 can't much, what more of this entry level nikons that would likely be similarly priced as that of the oly e-m5, to the newer and younger crowd going to buy their first cams...look at the micro 4/3 system first...just my one cent advice...!!!! Peace nikon.....i love you too.... ;) ;)

P.s.

I still have my nikon d7000 with the 18-200mm on it, in my dry box getting really dried up...haaayyyy...!!!! ;D ;D

Bong - thanks for your feedback and I'm glad that you are happy with your OMD. I'm not bothered by the weight at all since I have a pretty hefty gear. I'm interested with the Nikon D3200 since I might get one as a gift for my son. Either that or the Sony NEX 7. I have not considered the OM-D yet.

Go with it sir, i am sure this new nikon will have with it newer and better capabilities. Just look and browse around more sir, before committing something for your son, perhaps you can ask him what camera does he fancy without letting him know that you will be getting him one as a gift. he might want something lite but equally capable IQ that the likes of the newest 4/3 cams posses. :)

Glenn, I gave my daughter a Nikon D40 to introduce her to the wonderful world of photography. I look at it as a ritual from one generation of Nikonian passing on the torch to next generation. She uses her iPhone now for most of her photography needs but rest assured she will always remember the time she spent shooting the D40 for a whole summer in Paris years ago.

I disregarded the technical stuff and portability issues at that time. I will give the same suggestion to you. Running in the same vein of one quote from one Navy admiral, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" - I suggest without any reservations buy your son a Nikon dslr.

I agree with Thor.  Like him, I gave my son a D40x (with 18-55 and 18-200) and he doesn't want to use anything else. I also gave him a D300 but he's never really used it because he finds it too big and heavy. I next gave him a GF1 but he still insists on the D40x. Then, I made him use the OM-D for a few days thinking it would be a perfect excuse for me to get a silver one ;D  Alas, he says the D40x is still the perfect camera for him.

I have no doubt the D3200 will prove to be a winner! Your son will be happy with it :D

Hi Thor. This is what I am trying to inquire. The Nikon D3200 looks like a decent camera and my son likes to shoot video as well. Adding a lens or two will not be a problem since I have plenty. I was thinking of getting him started with the 35mm f1.8G since I don't use it that often anymore. These combo will be a compact and light DSLR.

Sana hindi nalang muna i lalabas ang D600 or D400, kung hindi, patay ako dahil sa akin mapupunta yon.

Hi Binggy. For now, he fancies HD video. If I get him a video tripod with fluid head, he will be set. He is more creative when it comes to video. I know he prefers full size DSLR since the controls are a lot faster to access with the dedicated buttons.

Re: OMD. I've been tempted before but somehow I still prefer the bulky feel of the DSLRs. The only problem for now is the lack of dedicated time to shoot due to work. Maybe something good will come out this July for me.

Glenn,

If he is interested in HD-video, the more reason that you get him a Nikon dslr so he'll have more access to lenses for creative reasons.

I have a very selfish reason when I bought my daughter a Nikon. I know how the camera worked inside and out. I remember a trip she took in Florida and I was 8,000 miles away and she texted me that she was having problem with her Nikon. We went through the menu troubleshooting at the top of my head and I remember exactly how the LCD menu looked like even without having an identical D40 in front of me.

Kalimutan mo muna yung technical stuff, Glenn. ;D Bilhan mo siya ng Nikon so that both of you can share the experience of being a Nikonian. :)

I think he has been influenced by my passion with my camera gear already. It's funny that several years ago, the most expensive camera that Nikon offers at the time was a 24mp D3x and now it is the entry level 24mp D3200.

Glenn, the D3200 is a very good camera choice for stills and video if your son's lenses are AF-S.

The main drawback I see with the D3200 is that it does not support 14-bit RAW but in many other respects such as in price, size and weight, the D3200 has many advantages.
